Women On The Run:

A New Trend In So Cal Freeway Chases

Freeway chases are nothing new to Southern California. It's not unusual to turn on the TV news and see a car barreling down the freeway followed by a stream of black and whites with lights flashing. These chases all end the same way for the most part. The person never gets away. When the vehicle's tires are gone after running over spike strips or what not, cops with guns drawn take the guy into custody. In most of these episodes, it's a man behind the wheel.

Now, it appears, more women are getting into the act. Just last week, a distraught mom led police on a chase through several cities in her minivan. When it came to an end on a street in the San Fernando Valley, the woman was so upset that a medical team had to be called in to tend to her. A week earlier in neighboring Orange County, two women-- one on parole-- led sheriff's deputies on an overnight chase up and down the 405. The duo eventually came to a stop in freeway lanes. When one of the gals emerged from the car with her hands up-- she was noticeably shaking in her boots-- and had to stop to vomit every few steps as she inched her way toward officers who took her into custody.

So, in pure Thelma and Louise fashion-- we may be in for more car chases involving women behind the wheel in 2002.
