Teenage Drivers:

Teenagers' Risky Driving Habits Should Have Their Parents And Other Motorists Very Worried

If you're swearing and honking at other drivers with kids are in the car, don't be surprised if the youngsters follow your lead and develop their own rage behind the wheel.

A study of teenage drivers in Southern California reveals an astounding 70% of young people have been involved in drunk driving, drag racing or other forms of reckless driving behavior. The teens say they're picking up the bad habits from being in the car with friends and parents who drive unsafely.

Teenage boys and girls participating in the survey conducted by the California Institute of Transportation said their Dad is their biggest role model for how to act while behind the wheel. However, findings show kids with stay at home moms were less likely to drive recklessly or with other unsafe drivers.

The more dangerous teen motorists are more likely to be involved in activities including contact sports and repairing cars. Only half of those who said their hobbies were reading, writing or working on the computer said they were involved in high-risk driving.

Teenage driving is a topic of growing concern because car crashes are the leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 20. Experts believe teens are more vulnerable to auto accidents because they think they're invincible and have the least amount of driving experience.
